The Hwange Thermal Power Station is the biggest power plant in Zimbabwe with an installed capacity of 920 MW. It is owned and driven by the national electricity company ZESA Holdings (Pvt) LTD.. It was built in two stages and consists of 4 units of 120 MW each and 2 units of 220 MW each.

The power station project is based on a coal resource of tonnes, capable of generating up to 2,000MW of power, almost as much as Zimbabwe''s total installed capacity. The proposed project envisages the construction of a number of smaller power plants over the next ten years.

The bulk supply is produced at the Kariba Dam Hydroelectric Power Station (750 MW), at the Hwange Thermal Power Station (920 MW) and at three smaller coalfired power stations, all of which are managed by the ZESA subsidiary, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC).
